The Problem

The program is located in Kenya’s Kawangware Slum, where extreme poverty makes daily survival a challenge. The situation is worsened by the fact that government social services, medical care, and other essential amenities are almost non-existent. 

Limited access to healthcare means that complications during childbirth often result in children developing cerebral palsy. In Kenya, these children face even greater challenges due to widespread misunderstanding and stigma around disabilities. The education system offers little support, as only children with mild symptoms are usually able to attend school, while those with more significant needs are left out. Many parents want to care for their children but cannot afford the support required, and often have no choice but to leave them at home while they go to work.

The Program

The Joyful Hearts Centre provides community-based rehabilitation for 12 children with cerebral palsy. A dedicated team made up of a special education teacher, occupational therapist, social worker, and volunteers works closely with each child to develop a personalized therapy plan.

The centre offers essential services like physiotherapy, feeding, hygiene care, social interaction, and developmental support. The goal is to help children build the skills they need to eventually join mainstream schools, opening the door to better education and a more inclusive future.

Since 2021, Joyful Hearts has shared space with Real Hope, a program that gives vulnerable children and youth a safe place to learn, play and grow. The shared compound is called Bella Ciao.
