Savar Building Project

Savar Children’s Village is a school that provides safety and education for vulnerable and orphaned girls, and is now expanding to welcome twice as many.
The Problem

Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage in the world, with girls as young as 13 being “sold” through the dowry system. Although child marriage is illegal, it remains widespread. Nearly three out of five young women were married before age 18, and one in five before turning 15. In addition to early marriage, many girls are also exploited through forced labour and prostitution. These harmful practices rob girls of their rights to education, health, safety, and the chance to grow and thrive.

The Project

For 40 years, the Savar Children’s Village has provided education and protection from child marriage and exploitation to vulnerable girls. Today, it serves as a sanctuary for 250 students, but Bangladesh’s harsh climate has deteriorated the facilities beyond repair, requiring a full rebuild rather than simple renovations. While this is a challenge, it’s also an opportunity. Plans are in motion to rebuild the campus, starting with a new multi-story dormitory that will double the school’s capacity to 500 girls.

“I was born in a very remote village in Bangladesh. I grew up in a home with seven brothers and sisters. My family was very poor and when my father died of kidney disease, we were left destitute. My sister and I were accepted to attend school at Savar Children’s Village in Dhaka and were thrilled to be able to receive an education. At 15, I was determined that I would get the best education possible, be successful, and return to my community to make a difference. I’m so thankful to Savar Children’s Village and my sponsor for supporting me through school and university. I have a degree in Social Science and am working on my masters. I’ve returned to my community and work for the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh.”
