Informal Education Program

This afterschool program addresses gaps in public education and fosters the overall development of children and youth.
The Problem

Schools in Cambodia face significant challenges that prevent students from getting the education they deserve. Many schools lack basic resources like books, learning materials, and access to technology, while overcrowded classrooms and high student-to-teacher ratios make it hard for children to receive the attention they need. Hunger adds another layer to the problem, as many children come to school without enough to eat, making it hard for them to concentrate and participate in their lessons.

For children from poor families, this challenging school experience often feels like a dead end. Many leave school to work and support their households, seeing little value in continuing their education under these circumstances. Because of these barriers, many Cambodian children miss out on the chance to learn and reach their full potential.

The Program

The Informal Education Program (formerly the Capacity Building Program) is an afterschool initiative for children aged 4-18, designed to address gaps in public education while fostering their overall development. The program enriches learning by providing access to books, learning materials, computers, and nutritious meals. In addition to academics, the program supports students’ physical and mental well-being through sports and recreational activities.

The program also engages parents on critical topics like the negative impacts of child labour and early marriage, the importance of education, and good sanitation and hygiene practices. By involving parents, the program fosters a supportive community that prioritizes children’s healthy growth and development.
