ZACTS School Fish Farming Project
The ZACTS School has expanded the school’s farm to include fish, creating food supply for the school and income generation for the community through sustainable agriculture.
The Problem
The ZACTS School for Orphans and Vulnerable Children was established in 2012 by International Needs Zambia and currently provides educational support to more than 1,700 students. Although the school is fortunate to receive government aid for teacher salaries, school fees, and educational resources, it does not fully cover the operational expenses. What’s more, government assistance does not extend to covering the expenses required for providing daily meals, which presents a challenge in ensuring the children are nourished every day.
The Project
Since 2018, ZACTS School has been running a farm on its property to raise funds for the school’s operations and provide nutritious food for the students. They began by growing vegetables and raising livestock, and now, thanks to your support, they have expanded into fish farming. Several ponds have been constructed on the school grounds to raise tilapia and catfish. Aquaculture has also been integrated into the curriculum for students in grades 8 to 12, offering hands-on learning and encouraging entrepreneurship.
