Ephphata School Agricultural Project
The Ephphata School for the Deaf is expanding its farmland into a full agricultural project to strengthen food security, give students hands-on learning opportunities, and support the school’s long-term sustainability.

The Problem
In a society where disabilities are often misunderstood or stigmatized, the Ephphata School has been bringing hope and education to deaf and hard of hearing children in Lubumbashi since 1983. Today, the school serves more than 250 students, but despite this growth, significant challenges remain. Providing daily meals has become increasingly difficult, and without a consistent food supply, students face the risk of hunger, poor health, and difficulty concentrating in class, while the school continues to depend on outside support to sustain its operations.
The Project
To address these challenges, Ephphata School is putting its land to work by cultivating a wide variety of vegetables, such as cabbage, tomatoes, okra, peppers, amaranth, eggplant, onions, and potatoes. With the addition of a new irrigation well, proper farming tools, and wages for three staff members, the school can ensure healthier meals for students, provide hands-on agricultural training for older grades, and secure a steady food supply. Part of the harvest will also be sold in the local market, creating an income stream to help cover operating costs and strengthen the school’s long-term sustainability.
