The Problem

In Burkina Faso, we learned last year from our partners that some students in their partner schools struggled to achieve the grades needed to continue on to secondary school, placing them at risk of dropping out. Factors such as extreme poverty, a lack of school supplies, caring for younger siblings while parents work, unrecognized learning disabilities, and even the absence of electricity to study indoors all contribute to these challenges.

In response, we launched a vocational training program that allows students to continue their education in a more practical, skills-based setting. Through this program, students receive hands-on instruction and internships in trades such as tailoring, hairdressing, electricity, and plumbing.

As these students prepare to graduate in June 2026, one gap remains. Many do not have the means to purchase the basic tools and supplies required to begin their working journey. Without these essentials, even well-trained graduates cannot accept clients, secure jobs, or generate income.

The Project

This project supports graduates of the vocational training program by providing startup supply kits at the point of graduation.

Each startup kit is specific to the student’s trade:

• Tailoring: sewing machines, scissors, measuring tools, and finishing materials, and storage
• Hairdressing: hooded standing hairdryer, styling tools, clippers, combs, brushes, capes, and hair products
• Electricity: hand tools, wiring materials, safety equipment, and testing devices
• Plumbing: wrenches, pipe cutters, fittings, sealants, and installation tools

These one-time startup kits enable graduates to move directly from training into employment or self-employment, where they can continue growing their skills and clientele.
