Boys Empowerment Program

This program will help end the cycle of gender discrimination in Limuru and guide boys into becoming responsible and respectful men.
The Problem

It’s well-known that girls often face tougher challenges than boys in their daily lives. They encounter obstacles like limited access to education, early marriage, and gender-based violence, all fuelled by deeply ingrained social norms. That’s why empowering girls has rightly been a top priority in development efforts worldwide.

However, our partners in Kenya have noticed a downside to this focus on girls’ empowerment. In communities like Limuru, they’ve witnessed many boys, lacking guidance and support, turn to substance abuse and grow into men who reinforce the belief that women and girls should be subservient to men and confined to domestic roles.

The Program

To tackle this issue, the Boys Empowerment Program will help end this cycle of gender discrimination in Limuru and guide boys into becoming responsible men. The program will be conducted in a “kids camp” style during school holidays, and mentors will cover important topics like respecting women and girls, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, coping with peer pressure, and recognizing positive and negative behaviours.

Sustainability is a key aspect of the program, with graduates being engaged as mentors for future groups. This approach not only keeps graduates involved but also provides younger children with role models closer to their age, improving learning and positive behaviour reinforcement.
