The Joyful Hearts Centre
A community-based rehabilitation program for children with cerebral palsy in the Kawangware slum.
Life is tough in the Kawangware slum just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Cerebral palsy is a common complication during the birthing process due to a lack of access to medical care. Having a child with a disability causes further challenges, as discrimination is widespread. Many parents have no choice but to lock children with cerebral palsy in the house to fend for themselves while the mother goes out to find work to provide food for the rest of the family.
The Joyful Hearts Centre (JHC) was founded to create awareness and reduce the stigma of cerebral palsy in the Kawangware Slums. Operating in RHYCO’s new safehouse compound, JHC is run by a special education teacher and gives families a place where their children can receive physiotherapy, feeding, cleaning, social stimulation, and other important development services. JHC has the capacity to care for 15 children. This program is being funded in collaboration with the Marafiki Trust and Humanity & Inclusion.
We are sincerely grateful for everything that has been done to help us to date – thank you for all your support, love, and cooperation. Every day we thank God for sending angels into our lives. We love you very much and we pray God will give you the strength to continue helping others. May God bless you abundantly.
