The Joyful Hearts Centre
A community-based rehabilitation program for children with cerebral palsy in the Kawangware slum.
Life is tough in the Kawangware slum just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Unemployment, HIV, and water-borne illness are just a few of the major challenges that make it a daily struggle to survive. For families with children who have cerebral palsy (CP), getting proper care is nearly impossible. The widespread discrimination against people with this muscular disease leads many parents to lock children with CP in the house to fend for themselves while the parents seek income to pay for food.
The Joyful Hearts Centre (JHC) was founded by our partner, the Real Hope Youth Community Organization (RHYCO), to create awareness and reduce the stigma of cerebral palsy in the Kawangware Slums. Operating in RHYCO’s new safehouse compound, JHC gives families a place where their children can receive physiotherapy, feeding, cleaning, social stimulation, and other important development services. JHC has the capacity to care for 15 children.
We would like to show our sincere gratitude for everything that has been done to help us to date – thank you for all your support, love and cooperation. Everyday we thank God for sending angels into our lives. We love you people very much and we pray to God to give you the strength to continue helping others. May God bless you abundantly.
