Kamlapur Drop-In Centre
The Kamlapur Drop-In Centre provides children working at the railway station with a safe space to learn, play, and grow.
The Problem
The Kamlapur Railway Station is Bangladesh’s largest railway hub, serving as a pivotal link connecting Dhaka with the entire nation. Sadly, the station has also become a refuge for street children, a majority of whom have been abandoned by their parents due to financial constraints. Within the confines of the station, these children employ various means to support themselves, ranging from assisting passengers with their luggage to collecting and trading empty plastic bottles. Tragically, some even resort to pickpocketing and engaging in sex work as a means of survival.
The Program
Our partners in Bangladesh have opened a new drop-in centre to care for children living and working at the Kamlapur Railway Station. The centre is open 5 days a week, and offers basic education, healthcare, nutritious meals, recreation, life skills training, and psychosocial support for 40 children. Program leaders also conduct awareness raising sessions with families and the community to advocate for the rights of children. The main goal of this program is to reduce the impact child labour has on a child’s well-being and socio-economic status.

It will also allow our partners to work closely with families and the community to help them understand child rights and the value of education. There will also be much advocacy work with employers, local entrepreneurs, and government officials to improve enforcement of the child protection laws.
