Jessore Vocational Training Centre

The program reaches vulnerable women in the Jessore area to enable them with income earning opportunities.
The Problem

Jessore is a district in the southwestern tip of Bangladesh where more than half the population live below the poverty line. Cyclones, tidal surges, floods, unemployment, and a low literacy rate are just a few of the challenges facing this region. Skills development, particularly for women, is key to improving rural productivity, employability, and income earning opportunities.

The Program

The Jessore Vocational Training Program empowers vulnerable women, most of whom are widows or have not completed school, by providing them with practical skills, tools, and equipment to help them enter the workforce. Training includes sewing, art, and computer applications. Since it began in 1998, the program has successfully trained nearly 1,000 women in the area.

“I came to the Jessore Vocational Training Centre to become a seamstress. When I completed my course, I applied for a job at the Sewing Centre for the Office of the District Commissioner in Jessore, and got the job! I still work there and really enjoy my work. I was promoted to Office Assistant and have been honored as a young entrepreneur for which I received a prize and a certificate. I am so grateful to International Needs and the Jessore Vocational Training Centre for teaching me the skills I needed to obtain this great opportunity.”
