Jessore Vocational Training Centre

The program reaches out to vulnerable women in the area to enable them with income earning opportunities.
The Problem

Jessore is a district in the southwestern tip of Bangladesh where more than half the population live below the poverty line. Cyclones, tidal surges, floods, unemployment, and a low literacy rate are just a few of the challenges facing this region. Skills development, particularly for women, is key to improving rural productivity, employability, and income earning opportunities.

The Program

International Needs’ Jessore Training Program reaches out to school dropouts, rural women, and widows, designed to provide the necessary skills, tools and equipment for a successful transition into the workforce. The skills training includes sewing, art, and computer applications. The program began in 1998 and has successfully trained nearly 1000 women in the area.

“I came to the Jessore Vocational Training Centre to become a seamstress. When I completed my course, I applied for a job at the Sewing Centre for the Office of the District Commissioner in Jessore, and got the job! I still work there and really enjoy my work. I was promoted to Office Assistant and have been honored as a young entrepreneur for which I received a prize and a certificate. I am so grateful to International Needs and the Jessore Vocational Training Centre for teaching me the skills I needed to obtain this great opportunity.”
