Ghana Group Empowerment Program

This sponsorship program ensures that children and youth get to attend school, where they receive a quality education, mentoring, and special development in peer support groups.
The Problem

The group program operates at Bubiashie School, situated in one of Accra’s largest slums. The Bubiashie district faces severe unemployment and pervasive poverty. Many children and youth arrive in the city from rural villages, hoping to secure a brighter future through education. They move in with relatives or guardians, only to face a harsh reality: overcrowded classrooms and schools that lack the resources to support their needs.

Without access to proper support, these children are often forced to abandon their dreams. Many end up working in exploitative and dangerous jobs such as street hawking, farming, fishing, or even sex work. Over time, they are pushed to the margins of society, trapped in a cycle of poverty that spans generations and offers little hope of escape.

The Program

Since 2025, the group program has focused on the long-term development of 60 vulnerable children and youth at Bubiashie School. By providing essential resources such as books, learning materials, uniforms, and daily meals, the program eases the financial burdens that often push these students toward child labour.

Through years of teaching, mentoring, and guidance, the program strives to empower these students, building their confidence and equipping them with the skills they need to shape their own futures. Special attention is given to children and youth facing significant challenges, including a history of abuse, family instability, malnutrition, or chronic absenteeism, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.

How Your Gift Helps!

Education opens doors and teaches children and youth how to find purpose and seek employment. With the group program, your gifts are pooled with all other donations so that we can accomplish more. By working together, we can take care of an entire group of students who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

100% Of Your Donation

will be used to improve the lives of children and youth in Ghana, thanks to some generous donors who pay all our overhead.

In 2021, we launched our group sponsorship model, supporting 375 students at the Amrahia and Kpogede Community Schools. Over three years, we witnessed profound transformations as students and their families built stronger foundations for their futures through education.

Our planned three-year assessment in 2024 revealed two key insights: parental empowerment initiatives had successfully strengthened many families’ ability to independently support their children’s primary education, and secondary school students faced the highest risk of dropping out, often leaving education to pursue work or enter early marriages.

These findings led to discussions with International Needs Ghana about maximizing our impact. Together, we identified an opportunity to evolve our group sponsorship model by focusing primarily on secondary students and vocational training, where costs are higher and can be prohibitive for many families. While the program will continue to support primary students, this shift in focus allows us to provide crucial resources for older students in technical education and skills development. This shift brought us to the Bubiashie district, where we found an urgent need for comprehensive educational support. By redirecting resources to this community, we’re positioned to address critical gaps that can make or break a young person’s educational journey.

This program contributes to four of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
