Basket of Chickens

Your gift will provide five chicks to a program for abused children in Kawangware slum.

The Problem

Located in the Kawangware Slum, the Bella Ciao Safe House & Drop-In Centre gives children a safe place away from the dangers of the street and the abuses of home life. The property currently has a small chicken coop with 5 chicks and 17 chickens they use for food and teaching. The coop, however, is very small and in poor shape. The RHCF (formerly RHYCO) team has expressed interest in expanding this chicken coop for better care of the animals and improved sustainability.

The Project

This project will reconstruct a new chicken coop big enough for 100 chickens, 10 rabbits, 4 guinea fowls, 3 ducks, and 2 turkeys. It will provide protein for the children, and teach them a variety of life skills, including:

  • Animal husbandry: Caring for the animals and keeping the coop clean to prevent diseases.
  • Basic business training: Teaching the children how to pick, count, and weigh eggs, calculate the costs when selling at the market, manage inventory, and handle customers.
