ZACTS Income Generating Vegetables Project
Zambia has experienced more than a decade of food production decline which has resulted in widespread hunger, especially in rural areas. Perhaps the biggest cause of food insecurity is the HIV/AIDS crisis. It has decimated the farming sector and left many orphans and widows with no means of earning a living.
International Needs is seeking to create income generation and food supply through sustainable agriculture in the Muzabula area, north of Solwezi. Our Zambian partners have cleared a large plot of land on which cabbages, tomatoes, and maize are growing well. The need is to clear more land in order to have a greater crop. The plants are watered by hand daily from a stream nearby. Purchasing an irrigation pump and the pipes needed will allow an adequate flow of water to the plants and produce three crops per year. Two workers are currently looking after the gardens and could care for more plants. Proceeds from this venture will go to support ZACTS OVC Primary School.
The total cost of the project is $18,000.
